College Football Week 6 Recap: Upsets, Rivalries, and a Shake-Up at the Top

October 10, 2026 | College Football

Week 6 of the 2026 college football season delivered one of the most unpredictable weekends of the year. From Oklahoma stunning top-ranked Texas in the Red River Rivalry to Georgia defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Saturday featured thrilling finishes, statement victories, and major implications for the College Football Playoff race.

Several ranked teams suffered devastating losses, while others strengthened their cases as legitimate national championship contenders. With the regular season approaching its halfway point, the separation between contenders and pretenders is becoming increasingly clear.

Oklahoma Shocks No. 1 Texas in Red River Rivalry

Arguably the biggest surprise of the weekend came in Dallas, where Oklahoma defeated No. 1 Texas 27-24 in another unforgettable chapter of the Red River Rivalry.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but two costly fourth-quarter interceptions ultimately changed the direction of the game. Oklahoma capitalized on the Longhorns' mistakes, including a defensive touchdown, before kicker Tate Sandell delivered the game-winning 47-yard field goal.

The victory gave Oklahoma a signature win and handed Texas its first major setback of the season. More importantly, it opened the door for a new team to claim the nation's No. 1 ranking.

Georgia Takes Down Alabama in Tuscaloosa

Georgia v Alabama

In one of the weekend's most anticipated matchups, No. 2 Georgia traveled to Tuscaloosa and escaped with a hard-fought 20-17 victory over No. 6 Alabama.

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton delivered an efficient performance, completing 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards. The Bulldogs also established a strong rushing attack, finishing with approximately 200 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Georgia limited Alabama's explosive offensive opportunities and held quarterback Keelon Russell to 185 passing yards.

The victory represented another major achievement for Kirby Smart's program and strengthened Georgia's position as a national championship favorite.

Combined with Texas' loss to Oklahoma, the result propelled Georgia to No. 1 in the subsequent AP Top 25 poll.

Kentucky Stuns LSU in Overtime

The SEC provided another dramatic finish when Kentucky defeated No. 10 LSU 35-34 in overtime.

The Wildcats refused to back down against a nationally ranked opponent, overcoming a late deficit before securing the victory with a successful two-point conversion.

For Kentucky, the result marked its second consecutive overtime victory and established the Wildcats as one of the conference's most intriguing teams.

For LSU, the defeat raised serious questions about its ability to compete consistently against conference opponents, particularly away from home.

UCLA Remains Unbeaten After Upsetting Oregon

One of the most surprising developments outside the SEC occurred in Eugene, where UCLA defeated Oregon 17-15.

Oregon's offense struggled throughout the afternoon, committing seven turnovers that repeatedly gave UCLA opportunities to control the game.

Despite the Ducks' attempts to rally, UCLA held firm, stopping a crucial two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter.

The victory kept the Bruins undefeated and elevated their status in the Big Ten championship conversation. Oregon, meanwhile, dropped out of the AP Top 25 following the defeat.

While the biggest headlines came from Georgia and Oklahoma, several other programs made statements of their own.

Notre Dame dominated Stanford 58-7, Ohio State cruised past Maryland 45-16, and Ole Miss dismantled Vanderbilt 52-17.

Indiana narrowly avoided an upset against Nebraska, earning a 20-17 comeback victory to preserve its undefeated record.

Elsewhere, South Carolina stunned No. 16 Florida 38-19, Missouri defeated Texas A&M 27-6, and Tennessee survived a difficult road matchup against Arkansas, winning 24-17.

These results further demonstrated the competitiveness of the 2026 season, particularly within the SEC and Big Ten.

How Week 6 Changed the National Rankings

The chaos of Saturday produced significant movement in the AP Top 25.

Georgia claimed the No. 1 ranking, receiving 66 of 70 first-place votes. Notre Dame climbed to second, while Miami, Ohio State, and Indiana rounded out the top five.

Texas dropped six positions to No. 7, while Alabama remained sixth despite its narrow loss to Georgia.

Perhaps the biggest rankings surprise involved Oregon, which fell completely out of the Top 25. UCLA climbed nine spots to No. 12, and Kentucky returned to the rankings at No. 15.

Looking Ahead: The Playoff Race Intensifies

With Week 6 officially in the books, attention now turns toward several major Week 7 matchups.

Ohio State and Indiana are set to meet in a battle of top-five programs, while Notre Dame travels to BYU for another top-10 showdown. Alabama will also look to rebound against Tennessee in Knoxville.

Georgia enters the upcoming weekend controlling its national championship destiny, but as Week 6 demonstrated, rankings offer no guarantee of victory.

The biggest takeaway from Saturday is simple: no team can afford to overlook an opponent.

Between Oklahoma's rivalry upset, Kentucky's overtime heroics, UCLA's statement victory, and Georgia's triumph in Tuscaloosa, Week 6 reminded fans why college football remains one of the most entertaining sports in America.

With conference championship races heating up and playoff positioning becoming increasingly important, the second half of the 2026 season promises even more drama.
