College Football Week 5 Recap: Chaos Arrives, and Week 6 Brings the Heavyweights

College Football Week 5 Recap: Chaos Arrives, and Week 6 Brings the Heavyweights

Week 5 of the 2026 college football season delivered exactly what makes October football so exciting: dominant performances from national contenders, surprising upsets, and several games that completely changed the way the College Football Playoff picture looks.

And if Week 5 was about separating contenders from pretenders, Week 6 is about putting some of the biggest contenders directly against each other.

Week 5: The Biggest Results

Alabama Sends a Message

Alabama entered Week 5 ranked No. 6 and left with one of the weekend's most impressive victories.

The Crimson Tide traveled to Mississippi State and dominated the Bulldogs, winning 56-23. Quarterback Keelon Russell accounted for 301 total yards and four touchdowns as Alabama improved to 5-0.

The victory was more than just another win. Alabama looked like a legitimate national championship contender, and now the Crimson Tide gets its biggest test of the season.

That test is Georgia.

Georgia Handles Vanderbilt

No. 2 Georgia remained undefeated with a 38-14 victory over Vanderbilt.

The Bulldogs had to work through a relatively competitive first half before taking control after halftime. Georgia's victory kept the Bulldogs at 5-0 and set up the biggest game of Week 6.

Florida's Big Drop

One of the biggest surprises of the weekend came in Columbia.

After Florida had defeated Ole Miss the previous week, the Gators appeared to be moving into the national championship conversation. Instead, No. 25 Missouri completely flipped that narrative.

Missouri destroyed Florida 45-17, holding the Gators' offense in check and producing 11 tackles for loss.

The result was one of the biggest momentum swings of the season. Florida went from looking like a potential playoff team to having major questions surrounding its season.

Ohio State Takes Down Iowa

No. 5 Ohio State continued to look like one of the country's most complete teams with a 31-14 win over No. 20 Iowa.

The Buckeyes controlled the game and showed why they remain one of the favorites in the Big Ten.

Ohio State now moves forward with Maryland coming to town in Week 6, while Iowa immediately gets another difficult road game at Washington.

Miami Dominates Clemson

No. 4 Miami made perhaps the loudest statement in the ACC.

The Hurricanes went into Clemson and came away with a 41-13 victory, improving to 5-0.

Miami's defense and rushing attack took over the game, and the Hurricanes pulled away after Clemson failed to capitalize on opportunities in the red zone.

Miami now looks like one of the most dangerous teams in the country.

Notre Dame Keeps Rolling

No. 3 Notre Dame defeated North Carolina 37-26, extending its winning streak to 15 games.

The Irish haven't always been perfect, but they continue to find ways to win. Notre Dame remains undefeated and enters Week 6 with Stanford coming to town.

Indiana Keeps Winning

The defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers continued their remarkable run with a 47-15 victory over Rutgers.

Indiana is now 5-0 and has won 20 consecutive games.

The Hoosiers' next challenge comes against Nebraska, which should provide a much more interesting test.

BYU Wins a Defensive Battle

No. 8 BYU traveled to TCU and escaped with a 17-10 victory.

It wasn't an offensive showcase, but BYU did exactly what it needed to do on the road. The Cougars remain undefeated and now face Iowa State in Week 6.

Texas Tech Rolls Colorado

No. 11 Texas Tech defeated Colorado 29-7, continuing a strong start to the season.

The Red Raiders' defense controlled the game and prevented Colorado from generating much offensively.

USC Survives Washington

USC had one of the most dramatic finishes of the weekend.

The Trojans held on for a 25-21 victory over Washington after the Huskies drove deep into USC territory late in the fourth quarter.

Washington had a chance to win the game, but USC's defense made the final stop.

It wasn't pretty, but for USC, surviving was what mattered.

Other Notable Week 5 Results

Week 5 had plenty of other important results:

  • Pittsburgh defeated Virginia Tech 35-33.

  • SMU beat Boston College 25-16.

  • Houston defeated UCF 27-17.

  • Tennessee defeated Auburn 24-14.

  • LSU destroyed McNeese 63-14.

  • Boise State defeated Utah State 37-18.

  • Kansas shut out Middle Tennessee 55-0.

  • Memphis dominated Charlotte 59-8.

  • Minnesota upset Michigan 20-14.

The combination of those results created a much clearer picture of which teams are serious playoff contenders.

What We Learned From Week 5

The biggest takeaway is that the playoff race is beginning to take shape.

Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, Notre Dame and Indiana all remain undefeated, while teams such as Florida and Michigan suffered major setbacks.

The SEC, in particular, is beginning to look incredibly difficult. Georgia and Alabama are both undefeated, while Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri and Tennessee are all fighting for position.

And now those contenders are going to start playing each other.

WEEK 6: THE WEEK EVERYONE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR

Week 6 is where the season gets serious.

The schedule features multiple games involving ranked teams, but one matchup stands above the rest.

No. 2 Georgia at No. 6 Alabama

Saturday, October 10 — 7:30 p.m. ET

This is the game of the week.

Two undefeated SEC powers. Two teams with national championship expectations. And both are coming off convincing Week 5 victories.

Georgia is 5-0.

Alabama is 5-0.

Something has to give.

For Georgia, this is an opportunity to establish itself as the best team in the SEC. For Alabama, it's a chance to prove that the Crimson Tide belongs among the country's elite.

The winner will have a massive advantage in the SEC race and the national playoff picture.

Expect this one to be physical, intense and decided by a few crucial plays.

No. 1 Texas vs. Oklahoma

Saturday, October 10 — 3:30 p.m. ET

The Red River Rivalry returns.

Texas enters Week 6 ranked No. 1, while Oklahoma will be looking to knock off its rival in one of college football's most famous games.

This matchup is played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, making the atmosphere even more unique.

For Texas, the objective is simple: protect the No. 1 ranking and continue an undefeated run.

For Oklahoma, this is the opportunity to completely change its season.

Rivalry games don't always follow the rankings, which makes this one particularly dangerous for Texas.

No. 21 UCLA at No. 13 Oregon

The Big Ten brings another ranked matchup when UCLA travels to Oregon.

Oregon is ranked No. 13, while UCLA comes in at No. 21.

The Ducks will have home-field advantage at Autzen Stadium, but UCLA has the talent to make this a serious challenge.

This could become one of the most important games in the Big Ten standings.

No. 19 USC at Penn State

USC survived Washington in Week 5.

Now the Trojans have to travel to Penn State.

That's a significant challenge.

Penn State will be looking to take advantage of USC's defensive problems, while the Trojans need to prove that their Week 5 escape wasn't a sign of larger problems.

A loss here could make the playoff path considerably more difficult for USC.

Iowa State at No. 8 BYU

Friday night brings an intriguing Big 12 matchup.

Iowa State travels to BYU, where the eighth-ranked Cougars will try to remain undefeated.

BYU just won a defensive battle against TCU, but Iowa State will test whether the Cougars can consistently produce on offense.

This is one of those games that could quietly become extremely important later in the season.

Texas A&M at No. 14 Missouri

Missouri enters Week 6 with plenty of momentum after destroying Florida.

Now the Tigers face another SEC challenge against Texas A&M.

A&M will have an opportunity to slow Missouri's momentum, while Missouri can establish itself as a legitimate contender with another major victory.

Tennessee at Arkansas

Tennessee enters this game ranked No. 15 after defeating Auburn.

Arkansas will have home-field advantage, making this a dangerous road game for the Volunteers.

Tennessee can't afford to overlook Arkansas with bigger SEC games ahead.

LSU at Kentucky

No. 10 LSU travels to Kentucky looking to continue its strong start.

LSU dominated McNeese in Week 5, but Kentucky represents a much different challenge.

The Tigers need to avoid a slow start and take care of business on the road.

The Week 6 Storyline

Week 5 showed us who was rising.

Week 6 will show us who is real.

Georgia and Alabama will battle for SEC supremacy. Texas and Oklahoma will renew one of college football's greatest rivalries. Oregon and UCLA will clash in the Big Ten. USC and Penn State will fight for playoff positioning.

And that's before considering BYU, LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio State, Indiana and Notre Dame.

The season has reached the point where every major game can dramatically change the playoff picture.

After five weeks, the contenders are beginning to separate.

After Week 6, we could know a lot more about who has a legitimate chance to play for a national championship.

And if Georgia-Alabama lives up to the hype, Saturday night could provide the biggest statement of the entire 2026 season.
