A study of conferences : pac 12

Well spring ball is in the air and what a way to discuss then to look at history of the different power 4 conference's and we shall start with a study of the pac 12 lets get in to it!

History of the pac 12

Founded in 1915 the pac 12 was originally  called the pac 8 with the original charter members being Cal, Washington and Oregon

but going in to the 1970s the pac 8 rebranded in to the pac 10 with the addition of Arizona and Arizona st and going in to the 80s oregon and Washington st were having issues and with the collapse of the south west conference (not to be confused with the SEC) Texas expressed a interest joining the conference along with Colorado and Texas A&M  Texas Tech, and baylor.

Pac 10 going in to the early 2010s

at the end of the 2008 season with alot of folks thinking that there were barriers to entry in to the BCS most prestigious bowl games utah stuns the college football world by stunning Alabama  37-16  stopping the tides vaunted running game and completing the utes undefeated run to be national champions in 2008 making it the second time the utes going undefeated the first being in 2008 but that started a chain of events that lead to the modern pac 12 that

we know today when on june 10th when chip brown at orangebloods  detailing the pac 10 and the university of Texas efforts to make the first super conference in college football almost every news site listed utah as a afterthought canidate at best but on june16th after texas made a public commitment to keep the big 12 intact(at ten teams) pac ten commissioner larry scott  sent the message every ute fan wanted to hear " come on board utes"

pac 12 revenue

Now the following blurb is from sportico please go there if you want a more detailed look at pac 12  finances but this highlights something that the pac 12 has changed from the time it imploded to itbeing back yes it makes money but schools are getting less

The Pac-12 Conference brought in $603.8 million for the period between July 2022 and June 2023, the league’s final fiscal year before it began the painful and litigious process of whittling down from a dozen schools to a pair.

That FY23 revenue sum was an increase from the $580 million it reported earning in the fiscal year 2022, which had previously set the mark for the league’s greatest earnings. The year-over-year increase largely owed to the $389 million the conference took in from its television rights fees last fiscal year, as well as $140 million from postseason bowls.

“We are pleased to have generated record revenues for our members,” Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould said in a press release.

At the same time, according to its latest tax filings, the conference distributed about $33 million to each of its members, 10 of whom have since accepted bids to join rival conferences at the start of next academic year. Those FY23 distributions were about $3 million less than members received the previous fiscal year.  sportico article on the pac 12
